  • Villa Duchesne Invitational
  • Villa Duchesne
  • NAQT HSNCT Qualifier
  • PACE NSC Qualifier
  • Questions: NAQT IS-111 (Varsity), IS-114A (JV)
  • At this time, we anticipate running two fields (a 12 team "Varsity" division and an 8 team "JV/Novice" division) with the most competitive teams from St. Louis and across Missouri in attendance. This tournament will operate on questions from NAQT, specifically set IS-111. This is the same set as the Kewpie Invitational in early January, so of course, teams may not enter both events. The format will be similar to recent NAQT tournaments held elsewhere in Missouri - pyramidal questions, neg-5's for incorrect early buzzes, 15 points instead of 10 for correct early answers, and no rebounding on bonuses.

  • NAQT Missouri Qualifier
  • MOQBA at University of Missouri-Columbia
  • NAQT HSNCT Qualifier
  • PACE NSC Qualifier
  • Questions: NAQT IS-115
  • As MOQBA's flagship event, this tournament regularly features a diverse field of teams from throughout Missouri, creating a championship atmosphere and recognizing the state's top teams for national tournament qualification. Matt Chadbourne and Jeffrey Hill will serve as tournament directors of this official NAQT event, which will use untimed NAQT rules. The top fifteen percent of the field will automatically qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT), to be held in Atlanta, Georgia on May 25-27, 2012, and the PACE National Scholastics Championship, which will be held at Washington University in St. Louis on June 9-10, 2012. In addition, the champion of this tournament is guaranteed a spot in the 2012 HSNCT, and the top team that had not qualified at a previously-held tournament will also receive a bid to HSNCT. MOQBA warmly welcomes all teams to attend this tournament even if they do not plan to attend a national championship, as we intend to provide all teams with a true representation of Missouri quizbowl.

  • Savannah Invitational
  • Savannah High School
  • NAQT HSNCT Qualifier
  • PACE NSC Qualifier
  • Questions: NAQT IS-114A
  • This tournament's goal is to continue to get more teams from the NW Missouri area interested in NAQT-style questions and get the best teams qualified for HSNCT. The format will be two halves, consisting of tossups with three part, nonrebounding bonuses.

  • Missouri S&T Spring Tournament
  • Missouri S&T
  • NAQT HSNCT Qualifier
  • PACE NSC Qualifier
  • Questions: NAQT IS-114A
  • Games consist of twenty tossups worth ten points each, followed by non-rebounding bonuses worth up to thirty points. Tossups will feature "powers" (additional points awarded for correct buzzes very early in the question) and "negs" (five point deductions for incorrect answers before the question is finished).

Questions for this tournament will be provided by National Academic Quiz Tournaments, this year's official MSHSAA state provider. Specifically, we will be using their set IS-114A. The questions will be pyramidal in style, and significantly easier than those used in the fall tournament; these questions will strongly resemble those used in the second and fourth quarters of MSHSAA district competition, so this tournament will be a great tune-up for district play. The tournament will be certified by MSHSAA, and the top 15% of the field in each division will qualify for the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on May 25-27, as well as the PACE National Scholastics Championship, to be held at Washington University in St. Louis on June 9-10.

The field cap is tentatively set at 20 teams, though we will make every effort to include all interested teams, and we will divide the field into small-school and large-school divisions of roughly equal size. The tournament will feature preliminary rounds in the morning and playoffs after lunch; the exact specifications of the tournament will be determined by the final field size, but every team will be guaranteed a minimum of seven games. Our tournament traditionally features a strong and diverse field of teams from throughout the state.

  • North Kansas City End of the Season Tournament
  • North Kansas City High School
  • NAQT HSNCT Qualifier
  • PACE NSC Qualifier
  • Questions: NAQT IS-113
  • North Kansas City's Quizbowl Team is excited to announce our first annual End of the Season Tournament, which will take place on March 24th, 2012. This tournament is intended to be a chance for teams in the Kansas City area to play one last tournament before MSHSAA districts. This tournament will use questions from NAQT's IS-113, which are similar in style to the pyramidal questions that NAQT uses in their MSHSAA state series, so this will be a good chance to prepare for state.

This tournament will use a format similar to that used at our other recent tournaments. There will be 20 tossups in each game, and each correct tossup will have a 30-point rebounding bonus attached to it. Tossups will be worth 10 points normally, but we will have 15 point "powers" for correct early buzzes, and -5 point penalties for interrupts. There will not be calculation tossups, although there will be math calculation bonuses along with non-calculation math questions.

  • Parkway West Spring Academic Tournament
  • Parkway West High School
  • PACE NSC Qualifier
  • Questions: HSAPQ Tournament 23
  • The Parkway West Quizbowl team is pleased to announce the first ever Parkway West Spring Academic Tournament. This tournament will be run on Saturday March 24th and will be run on questions written by High School Academic Pyramid Questions. The Missouri Quizbowl Alliance is sanctioning this event.

We will have 20 tossups per game, with each tossup having a 30 point bonus attached to it. Tossups will be worth 10 points, will have 15 point powers if players get the correct answer early enough in the question, and will have -5 point penalties for incorrect interruptions. Bonuses will not be rebounding.

We will have an 18 team cap on the field, which will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

  • Spring Panther Academic Tournament
  • Centralia High School
  • PACE NSC Qualifier
  • Questions: BHSAT Mirror
  • The Centralia Quizbowl team is excited to announce our first annual Spring Panther Academic Tournament (SPAT), on March 24th, 2012. We will be using questions written by Yale University's quizbowl team. This will be a regular varsity tournament, so teams are allowed to bring all of their players, and teams are also encouraged to bring newer players on additional teams.

These questions will be pyramidal, similar to the style NAQT writes for parts of the MSHSAA state championship. The game format will be the national standard format of 20 tossups, with each tossup having a 30-point bonus question attached.

There will be an 18 team cap on the field, and teams are able to register on a first-come, first-served basis. If the field fills, teams should expect to play 10 games.

  • Tuscumbia Spring Academic Tournament
  • Tuscumbia High School
  • PACE NSC Qualifier
  • Questions: BHSAT Mirror
  • We will be using a pyramidal question set written by Yale University's quiz bowl team; last year's version of the set can be found here. As you can see, each game will consist of 20 tossups, each of which is followed by a rebounding, three part bonus worth thirty points. We will be using "negs", or five-point deductions for incorrect tossup answers before the moderator has finished reading the question. Each team will be guaranteed at least eight matches, but the exact tournament format will be determined by the number of teams in attendance. In order to allow players to gain as much experience as possible, rosters will be limited to six players per team.

Because of space and staffing concerns, we will initially cap the field at twelve teams. If we have enough staff and rooms to accommodate more teams, I will expand the field after it has initially filled.

  • MOQBA Pre-Nationals and Singles Championship
  • MOQBA @ University of Missouri
  • Questions: Prison Bowl mirror
  • As with the last 2 years, this tournament is taking advantage of MSHSAA's new rules allowing teams to play one tournament after districts but before nationals. This event is intended to both serve as a chance for teams to play one last invitational tournament of their season, and to give teams going to nationals a chance to get back into the game after the late spring lull in tournaments. Any team can register, whether or not they plan to attend nationals. Last year, we had a very competitive field which even had teams coming from out of state to shake off the rust before nationals, so I expect this field will be even stronger this year.

This tournament will again be a mirror of Prison Bowl written by Hunter College High School's quizbowl team. It will be using strict ACF rules, meaning there will be 20 tossups worth 10 points each in every round. There will be -5 point penalties, and bonuses will be worth 30 points each.
